Back to School: A Key Booking Opportunity for Hotels

Back to School marks an important shift in the hotel booking calendar. While family stays may naturally slow as children return to school, September presents a significant opportunity to capture shoulder-season demand and build bookings for the months ahead, and the opportunity is growing. SiteMinder's 2026 Hotel Booking Trends data shows European hotel bookings for September running 11.7% ahead year-on-year, reflecting a broader shift towards travel outside the traditional summer peak.

Families begin planning their next opportunities to get away, from October midterm and festive breaks to early 2027 stays. At the same time, couples, active retired guests and other travellers without school-age children are attractive audiences for quieter midweek and autumn escapes, while the return of the corporate, meetings and events market creates further opportunities.

For independent hotels, this makes September an important time to shift your marketing focus.

Here are 5 areas to focus on as the Back to School season begins.

1. Review and Refresh Your Website

Your website should reflect what your guests are thinking about now and what they are likely to book next.

Review your homepage, offers and key landing pages to ensure you're giving appropriate visibility to:

  • Autumn and midweek breaks
  • October midterm
  • Halloween breaks and events
  • Festive stays and Christmas experiences
  • Gift vouchers
  • Early 2027 breaks

Consider your hotel's average booking window when deciding which offers to promote. If guests typically book six to eight weeks in advance, your website should already be selling the experiences they'll be looking for in October and November.

It's also a good time to review the booking journey itself. Check that offers are easy to find, rates and inclusions are clear, and the journey from landing page to booking engine is as seamless as possible.

2. Target the Audiences Most Likely to Travel

Use your guest and booking data to identify the segments most likely to travel during September and October. Depending on your hotel, these might include couples, active retired guests, empty nesters, spa and wellness guests, golfers and activity-led travellers.

At the same time, continue marketing ahead to families for October midterm, Christmas and future school holidays.

Rather than relying on blanket discounts, develop relevant packages and experiences for each audience and give guests a compelling reason to book directly.

3. Shift Your Social Media Strategy

Your social content and paid campaigns should reflect the changing season too with a move towards autumn escapes, food, wellness, activities, couples' breaks and quieter midweek stays.

This is also the time to begin introducing content for October midterm and the festive season.

Review your paid social audiences and budgets. If particular segments are more likely to convert during the shoulder season, increase visibility among those audiences and retarget people who engaged with your hotel during the summer but didn't book.

4. Make Better Use of Your Hotel Database

September provides an excellent opportunity to re-engage previous guests and start generating demand for the months ahead.

Rather than sending the same email to your entire database, segment your audience using the guest data available to you.

Previous family guests might receive October midterm and festive family offers, while couples could receive autumn escape, dining or spa content. Spa guests can be targeted with wellness breaks, while previous Christmas guests can be introduced to this year's festive experiences.

The more relevant the message is to the recipient, the stronger the opportunity to generate engagement and ultimately bookings.

5. Review Your Paid Search and Digital Campaigns

Your guests' search behaviour changes with the season, so your campaigns should change with it.

Review Google Ads, Performance Max, paid social and remarketing campaigns to ensure your creative, landing pages and messaging reflect current booking intent.

Depending on your hotel's offering, this might include searches and audiences around autumn hotel breaks, midweek escapes, October midterm, spa and wellness breaks, romantic breaks, Christmas stays and gift vouchers.

Most importantly, use your own booking and campaign data to determine where budget should be concentrated rather than simply allowing your summer campaign strategy to continue into autumn.
