How independent hotels can turn AI search visibility into more profitable direct bookings.
From AI Recommendation to Direct Booking: Own the Guest After They've Found You
In a previous article, we asked why AI might recommend one four-star hotel while overlooking an apparently similar property next door. A good start but getting recommended is only half the battle.
Imagine a traveller asks an AI assistant:
"Find me a luxury hotel in Cork for a three-night anniversary break, with a great restaurant, city views and from which we can explore the city on foot."
Your hotel appears among the recommendations.
Success? Not quite.
For independent hotels, the real objective isn't simply AI visibility: it's turning that visibility into a profitable direct booking.
The Journey Is Getting Shorter
The traditional hotel booking journey involved numerous searches, visits to review websites, OTAs and individual hotel websites before the guest finally made a decision.
AI is compressing that process.
A traveller can increasingly describe exactly what they want conversationally and receive a shortlist matching those requirements. The opportunity for hotels is significant because someone arriving at your website following that type of recommendation may already have considerable intent.
They aren't necessarily asking "Where should I go?"
They're closer to asking "Should I book this hotel?"
The job of your website and booking engine is now to provide the answer.
Give Them a Reason to Book Direct
Imagine our traveller has been recommended Hotel A.
They visit its website and discover a three-night anniversary package including breakfast, dinner on one evening and a late checkout.
They can immediately see the rooms, package inclusions and cancellation conditions before checking live availability.
Hotel B offers a comparable experience but makes visitors search through several pages before eventually reaching a generic booking engine.
Which hotel is more likely to convert the recommendation into revenue?
The principle isn't new. The context is.
Hotels need to ensure that the promises which make them attractive in AI search continue seamlessly through the website and booking journey.
Remove the Booking Friction
Every unnecessary step gives the guest another opportunity to leave – or to check the same property on an OTA.
Ask yourself some simple questions.
Can someone move easily from an experience or offer page to relevant availability? Is the direct-booking advantage obvious? Are room types easy to compare? Are package inclusions clear? Are cancellation conditions understandable? Does the booking engine perform brilliantly on mobile?
Increasing direct revenue isn't only about generating more website traffic. It's about taking advantage of the traffic you already attract.
Think Beyond the Cheapest Rate
Winning the direct booking doesn't necessarily mean offering the lowest possible price.
Our anniversary traveller may be worth considerably more than someone simply searching for the cheapest room on Saturday night.
Packages, upgrades, dining, spa treatments and additional nights can all increase the value of that reservation.
This is where hotels should connect GEO strategy with revenue strategy.
Don't simply optimise to appear in more AI searches. Identify the searches made by the guests you most want to attract and create compelling reasons for those travellers to book directly.
Measure What AI Delivers
As AI search develops, measurement will become increasingly important.
Hotels should start monitoring traffic and bookings originating from AI platforms while also considering landing-page engagement, booking-engine conversion and revenue generated.
Google is already introducing greater visibility into how websites appear within its generative AI search experiences vis its Search Console platform.
The question for hotel marketing teams therefore shouldn't simply be:
"Are we appearing in AI search?"
It should be:
"Is AI search generating profitable direct bookings?"
At Aró Digital Strategy, we believe that's the metric that will ultimately matter.
