Reasons Why AI Recommends the Hotel Next Door Instead of Yours?

Why Does AI Recommend the Hotel Next Door Instead of Yours?

Calendar Wednesday, 16 September 2026

Imagine two four-star hotels in the same city.

Both have excellent locations. Also they have a great restaurant, attractive rooms and strong guest reviews. Their rates are similar and each has a well designed website with strong imagery.

A traveller asks ChatGPT, Google AI or Claude:

"Recommend a four-star hotel for a romantic weekend, within walking distance of the city centre, with a really good restaurant and somewhere quiet to relax."

Hotel A appears in the recommendations.

Hotel B doesn't.

Why?

Welcome to the increasingly important world of Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).

AI Needs to Understand Your Hotel

Traditional SEO often concentrated on ranking for searches such as "four-star hotel Galway" or "luxury hotel Dublin".

AI search is different because the questions can be far more conversational and specific.

For Hotel A to be recommended, an AI system needs to establish not simply that it is a four-star hotel, but that it is relevant to the particular traveller's needs as described by them.

Does it really have a good restaurant? Is it realistically within walking distance of the city centre? Is it suitable for couples? What makes it a good choice for a romantic break?

This is where two apparently similar hotels can begin to look very different to AI.

Give AI Something to Work With

Hotel A has detailed pages covering its restaurant, location, rooms, local experiences and romantic breaks.

Hotel B has a beautiful website but relies on generic statements such as: "Experience unforgettable luxury in the heart of the city."

It sounds good to a human, but provides surprisingly little useful information. Specificity matters.

Instead of simply saying your hotel has an "ideal location", explain that guests can walk to the city's main shopping district in ten minutes. Instead of describing an "exceptional dining experience", provide detailed information about the restaurant, chef, menus and local suppliers.

You could use your FAQ section to explain that your hotel does not cater for large groups and thus is ideal for couples or families looking for a quiet break.

Useful, original content gives AI search considerably more context about what makes the property distinctive and relevant.

Make Your Hotel Easy to Understand

Technical foundations matter too.

Hotel information should be accessible to AI search engines. Important content should exist as text rather than being hidden inside images, and information about the property must remain detailed, accurate and consistent.

Structured data can also clearly describe entities such as the hotel, rooms, location and amenities. It isn't a magic GEO button, but it is part of creating a well-structured digital presence.

Your Google Business Profile, website and social media should also tell a consistent story.

Think About Questions, Not Just Keywords

Perhaps the biggest opportunity is understanding what your ideal guests actually want. This is where researching and developing your hotel's ideal guest persona(s) will pay huge dividends for you.

A hotel traditionally targeting "luxury hotel Dublin" might instead develop specific and genuinely relevant content around questions such as:

"Where should we stay in Dublin without a car?"

"What is the best area of Dublin for a three-night romantic break?"

"Where should we stay before touring Ireland's East coast?"

This approach also prepares hotel content for increasingly conversational and voice-led search.

The objective isn't to manufacture hundreds of pages answering every imaginable AI prompt. It is to research and understand the personas of your ideal guests and create authoritative content that answers their real questions.

Would AI Recommend Your Hotel?

GEO isn't about finding a secret way to manipulate ChatGPT or Claude.

It's about making your hotel's digital presence so clear, useful and relevant that when AI looks for the best answer to a traveller's question, it has good reasons to include you.

At Aró Digital Strategy, we believe this creates a useful new question for hotel marketing teams.

Don't just ask:

"Where do we rank?"

Start asking:

"For which guest personas should AI recommend us – and have we given it the tools to do so?"
