Gift Voucher Season Strategy 2026
Gift Voucher Season Strategy 2026
For many hotels, gift vouchers aren't simply an add-on, they're an important source of direct revenue, particularly during the crucial Q4 gifting period.
Vouchers generate revenue in advance, introduce new guests to your property, and give existing guests another way to engage with your brand. Christmas remains the peak opportunity, but a strong voucher strategy can drive sales throughout the year around birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Day, Father's Day and other gifting occasions.
With the most important voucher sales period of the year approaching, September is the time to make sure your hotel is ready. From reviewing last year's performance to optimising the purchase journey and planning your campaigns, here are the areas worth focusing on now.
1. Start With Last Year's Performance
Before deciding what to do differently this year, look at what actually happened in 2025. Review your voucher sales data alongside your marketing activity to understand what sold, when it sold, and what drove those sales.
Look at:
- Total voucher revenue
- Number of vouchers sold
- Average voucher value
- Monetary versus experience voucher sales
- Best-selling voucher types and experiences
- Daily and weekly sales patterns
- Peak purchasing dates
- Black Friday and promotional performance
- Email-generated revenue
- Paid campaign performance and ROAS
- Mobile versus desktop performance
- Traffic and conversion rates on your voucher pages
Pay particular attention to when sales began to accelerate. If your data shows demand increased sharply at a particular point in November or December, that should influence when you ramp up marketing activity and media spend this year.
Also look at what didn't work. Were particular vouchers rarely purchased? Did a campaign generate plenty of traffic but few sales? Was there a point in the purchase journey where customers dropped out?
Your 2025 performance should be the starting point for your 2026 targets, product mix, marketing calendar and budget.
2. Decide Your Voucher Denominations and Product Mix
Open-value monetary vouchers are convenient, but they ask the buyer to do the work of deciding how much a gift should cost. A small set of clearly named, fixed-price popular experiences - an overnight escape, an afternoon tea for two, a spa day - lift average order value, as some buyers gravitate towards a recommended option rather than guessing at a number.
3. Make Vouchers Exceptionally Easy to Find
Don't make potential customers search for your voucher shop. As the gifting season approaches, vouchers should become increasingly prominent across your digital presence.
Consider visibility through:
- Your website navigation
- Homepage
- Relevant dining, spa and experience pages
- Email marketing
- Social media
- Paid search and social campaigns
- Google Business Profile, where appropriate
As Christmas gets closer, voucher visibility should increase accordingly.
Remember that someone buying a gift may know considerably less about your hotel than a regular guest. Make the proposition immediately clear.
4. Build Trust on the Voucher Page Itself
A gift buyer often has no personal experience of your hotel to draw confidence from and many will have no stay of their own to reassure them. Reviews, star ratings, press mentions and simple social proof ("over 2,000 vouchers gifted last Christmas") do more work on a voucher page than almost anywhere else on your site, precisely because the buyer has nothing else to go on.
If you collect testimonials, look for ones that specifically mention a voucher or gift experience, and feature them prominently at the point of purchase.
5. Review the Entire Mobile Purchase Journey
Ask yourself: how easy is it to actually buy a voucher on a phone? Test the entire journey yourself:
Website → voucher shop → voucher selection → personalisation → payment → confirmation
How many steps does it take? Is pricing clear? Are there unnecessary fields? Is payment straightforward? Does the voucher platform look and feel like part of your hotel's website?
Every unnecessary step is another opportunity for a customer to abandon their purchase.
6. Keep the Experience Consistent With Your Brand
A voucher purchase is still an interaction with your hotel. If someone moves from a beautifully designed hotel website into a generic-looking third-party checkout, the experience can suddenly feel disconnected.
Review your voucher platform's imagery, typography, tone of voice, descriptions and overall presentation. The journey should feel recognisably yours from discovery through to payment and delivery.
Whether digital or physical, the final voucher should feel like something the purchaser is delighted to give and the recipient will be excited to receive.
7. Build Your Q4 Marketing Plan
Once your website and voucher platform are optimised for sales, build your marketing activity progressively as Black Friday and the festive season approach, intensifying as purchasing urgency increases.
Use last year's sales patterns to help determine when to start, when to increase activity, and where to invest your budget. Plan across your channels, including email, organic social, paid social, paid search, website and on property merchandising and retargeting.
Your CRM is particularly valuable here. Previous guests already know your hotel and may be more receptive to giving an experience they've enjoyed themselves. Segment your database where possible rather than sending every guest the same voucher message, for example, previous dining guests may be particularly receptive to restaurant experiences etc.
8. Incorporate the Corporate Gifting Market
Alongside individual gift buyers, the audience is worth targeting directly. These buyers often purchase in bulk, may need an invoice or purchase-order payment option rather than a card checkout, and respond to different channels such as a direct email to existing corporate and event contacts, or a LinkedIn outreach, rather than consumer social ads.
Give corporate gifting a dedicated page or contact point and consider a simple bulk-order discount tier, rather than routing corporate buyers through the standard consumer voucher shop.
9. Plan for the Last-Minute Opportunity
One of the great advantages of digital vouchers is their immediacy. As Christmas approaches and delivery deadlines for physical gifts pass, an instantly delivered digital hotel voucher becomes an increasingly attractive option.
Make this benefit very clear in your messaging. A phrase like "Delivered instantly by email" can become an important part of your proposition in the final days before Christmas.
And don't wind down your marketing too early. Your previous year's sales data should tell you just how important the final days before Christmas are for your hotel.
10. Make Your Voucher Offering Discoverable in Search
Think about how someone looking for a gift might search.
Search behaviour is also becoming more conversational as people use AI-powered search and recommendation tools for inspiration. Make sure your website clearly communicates the experiences available, location, pricing, delivery options, validity and important terms.
A strong voucher landing page can support both traditional SEO and the clear, structured information increasingly important for AI discovery.
11. Measure Performance as the Campaign Progresses
Your Q4 voucher strategy should be dynamic, using live performance data to optimise it as the season progresses.
Monitor performance throughout Q4 and compare it with the same period in 2025. Track revenue, transaction volumes, average voucher value, product mix, conversion rates and channel performance against your targets.
If one experience is outperforming expectations, give it greater visibility. If an email campaign is converting particularly strongly, use those insights to inform subsequent sends. If paid campaigns aren't generating an acceptable return, adjust them.
12. Use Redemption Windows to Fill Quiet Periods
Expiry terms can be a lever for shaping when redemptions happen. A voucher valid midweek-only, or with blackout dates over your own peak season, can steer demand into January and February rather than adding to times that are already likely to be booked out.
13. Don't Forget What Happens When the Voucher Is Redeemed
The commercial opportunity doesn't end when a voucher is sold. Think about the recipient's journey too.
Make redemption straightforward, and use the resulting stay, meal or spa visit as an opportunity to introduce a new guest to the wider hotel experience. A voucher recipient who has an exceptional first experience may go on to return as a full-paying direct guest, making the long-term value of that original voucher significantly greater than its purchase price.
