Now that Google can book a hotel in AI Mode, we explain what that means for independent hotels

Google Can Now Book Your Hotel: What AI Mode Means for Independent Hotels

Calendar Tuesday, 08 September 2026

The hotel online booking journey has traditionally followed a relatively familiar path. A potential guest searches Google, browses hotel websites and OTAs; compares rates, and eventually reaches a booking engine, whether that is the hotel's own or a meta site.

As we have discussed in previous blogs, AI is beginning to change that journey.

In August 2026, Google announced a seismic shift with new hotel booking capabilities within AI Mode in search. Initially rolling out in the US, a traveller can now describe their trip conversationally, see hotel recommendations, reviews and comparisons, then ask AI Mode to complete the booking. With participating partners, the user can select a room, review cancellation terms and pay through Google Pay.

For independent hotels, this isn't simply another Google update. It could represent a fundamental change in how guests discover and book accommodation.

From Hotel Search to Hotel Conversation

Traditional hotel search relies heavily on filters. Travellers enter a destination, dates and number of guests before narrowing hundreds of results. Generative AI turns that process into a conversation.

A traveller might ask:

"Find me a luxury hotel on the south coast of England for a three-night October break, with sea views, a spa and a good restaurant."

AI can interpret those requirements and present suitable properties.

The important difference is intent. Instead of forcing travellers to translate what they want into search filters, AI can understand a much more detailed description of the holiday. And increasingly, the conversation doesn't end with a recommendation. It can move towards making the hotel booking.

What Happens to the Hotel Website?

Does this mean hotel websites become less important? We believe the opposite could be true.

AI needs reliable information to understand a hotel. Your website remains one of the most important sources of information about your rooms, facilities, experiences, location and brand.

However, hotels need to start thinking beyond how their website looks to a human visitor. They must also consider how easily AI systems can understand the property.

Clear room descriptions, accurate amenity information, structured content, strong destination pages and consistent information across the web are becoming increasingly important.

The challenge is moving from SEO to GEO – Generative Engine Optimisation.

It is no longer enough to ask: "Can someone find our hotel on Google?"

Hotels increasingly need to ask: "Can an AI understand when our hotel is the right answer?"

Your Booking Engine Matters Too

The next stage is even more significant.

AI agents are beginning to interact with live hotel availability, rates and booking technology. That creates the possibility of a traveller asking an AI assistant for a hotel recommendation and immediately seeing the hotel's available rooms and direct rate.

For independent hotels, this could create an enormous opportunity.

Instead of:

Google → OTA → Hotel

the journey could become:

AI → Hotel's live availability → Direct booking

But only if the hotel's technology is ready for it.

Booking engines will increasingly need to communicate effectively with AI platforms while providing accurate availability, room information, policies and pricing in real time.

Is Your Hotel Ready for AI Booking?

Hotels don't need to redesign their entire digital strategy overnight. But they should start preparing now.

That means ensuring your website content is accurate and structured, your booking engine integrates effectively with your wider technology stack and your direct rates and availability can be distributed efficiently.

Far from AI eliminating the hotel website or booking engine, it should enable more travellers to reach them; and potentially expose them to a far greater range of bookers - real or agentic.

For independent hotels competing against the enormous technology budgets of the OTAs, getting this right could turn AI from another digital challenge into a major direct-booking opportunity.
